The Bulgarian public reacted with shock and protest; national mourning and demonstrations filled the streets. Many viewed the borders as unjust, feeling betrayed by Wilson’s principles. The slogan "Bulgaria would now border itself" encapsulated the sense of shattered national unity. The political leadership, including Prime Minister Teodor Teoddorov, refused to sign the treaty initially, and Teodorov resigned, replaced by Alexander Stamboliski, a Socialist who sought moderate policies and reconciliation.
