Context: Hungary After the Great War

Since the armistice of 1918 marked the end of World War I, Hungary found itself grappling with political chaos and territorial upheaval. The once-mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire had collapsed, leading to a series of turbulent political developments: a democratic revolution, a Bolshevik uprising, and a disastrous war with neighboring nations. In 1920, Hungary was restructured into a new state known as the Hungarian Kingdom, but it lacked a reigning monarch. The borders were dramatically reduced—now only a third of what they had been pre-1914—and the country was governed by a regent, Miklós Horthy, who held immense power but refused to declare himself king.
