Unaware that key figures, soldiers, and government officials had not been informed or prepared, Karl entered Hungary and immediately sought to meet with Regent Horthy. The meeting, held in Budapest, was inconclusive but reaffirmed Karl's adamant claims to the throne. He believed, though lacked evidence, that France would support his coronation.

His plans quickly unraveled. Unknown to his supporters, diplomatic and military authorities outside Hungary began issuing pressure for him to leave, fearing regional destabilization and possible conflict.
