Part 8/13:
Undeterred, Karl made a second attempt in October 1921, this time flying from Switzerland directly into southwestern Hungary. His supporters in the "Little Entente" countries and elsewhere prepared swiftly. Karl arrived in Szombathely (a town in western Hungary) and quickly moved toward Budapest, where a provisional government was formed with Eán Rákoski as prime minister.
His arrival caused immediate alarm among Hungarian authorities and neighboring states. The Hungarian government, led by Horthy's regent government, declared Karl’s presence an illegal coup attempt. Military and police were mobilized, and borders were sealed.
