Part 9/13:

Although Karl's supporters aimed to rally with him at Budapest, disorganization, lack of reliable arms, and mixed loyalties among troops hampered their progress. Diplomatic pressure intensified—Yugoslavia mobilized troops, Czechoslovakia demanded control over the Hungarian army, and the Allies warned of invasion.

The Failure and Exile of Karl I

Despite his enthusiasm, Karl’s second attempt failed brutally. His forces lacked the discipline, coordination, and sheer power to overcome the government’s defenses. Internal confusion, failed communications, and desertions plagued his troops.

Most notably, General Ödön Pallavicini, one of Karl’s officers, defected to the government, providing critical intelligence that disarmed Karl’s chances for success.
