The conflict climaxed on July 10, 1921. Drexler, fearful of Hitler’s influence, invited rival nationalist figures to discuss unification with the Nazis, but Hitler’s return from a nationalist tour in Berlin thwarted these plans. A heated showdown ensued at the Nazi Party Committee, where Hitler demanded to be appointed the party’s undisputed leader with dictatorial powers. His formidable oratory and popularity swayed nearly all members—only one dissenter opposed him.
