In a decisive move, the party’s leadership acquiesced, and Hitler was declared the Führer (leader) of the Nazi Party on July 29, 1921. He rejoined the party with the member number 3,680 and swiftly consolidated power, installing Herbert von Nase as his right hand and shaping the Nazi paramilitary wing—the Sturmabteilung (SA)—initially called the ‘Sport and Gymnastics Section,’ later famously known as the Brownshirts.
