The early 1920s saw many such groups vying for influence. The Bavarian government turned a blind eye to these militias, many of whom were ex-military men disillusioned by Germany’s defeat and the economic hardships following the Treaty of Versailles. The SA's members, mostly middle or lower-middle-class workers and outlaws, wore military-style uniforms, organizing marches and clashes with socialist and communist groups—clashes that often turned violent.
