Despite the miners' fierce efforts, they lacked sufficient coordination and supplies. The arrival of federal aircraft and the threat of US military intervention compelled the miners to withdraw. The conflict ended with a virtually bloodless U.S. Army occupation, but estimates suggest between 20 and 100 deaths resulted from the violence.
