Part 11/17:
Amidst the turmoil, the British forces managed to stabilize their positions, despite heavy losses. Cunningham was initially convinced of the importance of retreat but was dissuaded by Auchinleck, who believed the British could still turn the tide. Orders were issued for the 4th Indian Division and other units to hold their positions and prepare for counterattack, instead of retreating into Egypt.
British air reconnaissance, although hampered by the chaos and clouds of dust, attempted to track the movements of Rommel’s forces. Ultra intelligence revealed Rommel’s intention to dash toward key supply points—most notably the railhead at Misheifa—but this information was delayed or inaccessible at critical moments, preventing a proactive response.
