As we stand on the brink of the 21st century, it becomes essential to reflect on these achievements, juxtaposed with the new, daunting challenges that lie ahead. The shift from starvation as the primary global health crisis to obesity, from plagues overtaking lives to the natural decline of old age, and from violence to accidents indicates a progress in the human condition that offers a foundation to build upon. Yet, as we face the complexities of the coming era—particularly the intertwining phenomena of climate change, disruptive technologies, and evolving ethical considerations—the very essence of our humanity is called into question.
