Scientists have paired Dolphin Gemma with a specialized underwater system known as CHAT (citation hearing augmentation telemetry system), designed to associate sounds with specific real-world objects that dolphins may find interesting, such as floating seaweed or colorful scarves. By creating a repertoire of whistles associated with various items and encouraging reciprocal sounds from dolphins, researchers are inching closer to the potential for genuine dialogue.
