While the hippos appear to be the primary benefactors of this arrangement by receiving care, it's the fish that may ultimately reap greater rewards. The association with hippos allows these fish access to abundant vegetation, growing around the hippo's pool, which would otherwise remain out of reach for them. Thus, the hippos inadvertently contribute to the ecosystem that surrounds them by ensuring cleaner waters and healthier flora.
