The previous rifle, the G36, served the Bundeswehr for many years but faced criticism, especially under extreme temperature conditions. As Schmidtke explained, soldiers reported that while the G36 was capable of accurate shooting, it struggled in high-temperature environments and during sustained use. Such limitations could compromise combat effectiveness when soldiers operate in demanding climates.
