The Downstream construction method is more robust and involves constructing the embankment in the opposite direction. Initially, a starter dyke is again built, with an internal drain incorporated to manage the flow of water. The tailings are discharged behind the dyke, leading to the formation of a stable embankment.
Unlike the Upstream method, the Downstream approach requires more material, making it a more expensive option. However, its increased stability in the face of seismic activity makes it a preferred choice in many circumstances, particularly in areas prone to earthquakes. This method builds outwards, ensuring the safety and integrity of the tailings storage facility.
