In this notation, (L) represents the limit we are trying to determine. Knowing that the function doesn't have to touch this value allows for continuous exploration around points, even when traditional calculations would suggest a function is undefined.
Graphical Representation of Limits
To visualize limits, imagine a function graphed on a coordinate plane. As we draw the graph closer to a specific point, we look for the output value the function tends to, without necessarily passing through that point. For instance, a graph may show discontinuities or holes; nonetheless, the limit can still exist at that location.
