Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer was a German physician born in 1935, who pioneered GNM after a life-altering tragedy; the accidental death of his son Dirk led him to hypothesize a connection between emotional trauma and physical disease. Soon after Dirk's death, Hamer himself was diagnosed with testicular cancer, compelling him to embark on a deep exploration of the psycho-emotional origins of various illnesses.

Hamer’s research posits that each disease is preceded by an “unexpected shock” or conflict which he termed as "Dirk Hamer Syndrome" (DHS). The crux of GNM is the assertion that these conflicts affect specific areas of the brain, which in turn signal corresponding tissues in the body to either proliferate (tumor growth) or undergo a functional loss.
