The illumination produced by a sufficient quantity of thermite would be strikingly intense, often compared to that of a quarter of the Sun. If thermite had played a significant role, visual evidence would presumably have captured this spectacular reaction. Yet, the absence of these characteristics in the immediate aftermath suggests that, if thermite was present, its capacity to cause structural failure in a way suggested by some theorists is highly dubious.
