Beginning with a simple lighter, the demonstrator ignited the thermite and recorded their observations. At first, even though the thermite particles started glowing orange, there was no ignition. The failure of the lighter to spark a reaction raised eyebrows among those watching, foreshadowing a series of similar attempts.
Following up with a torch that provided a larger flame, the demonstrator noted that while the thermite did glow, it still resisted ignition.
