With the CIA’s aspirations to kill Castro thwarted, the agency’s ties to organized crime became apparent, particularly their dealings with mobsters who saw Kennedy as an impediment to their interests. Likewise, powerful Texas oilmen had vested interests in the rise of Castro’s regime, which jeopardized their investments. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson also had much to gain from Kennedy’s removal, caught in scandals that risked his political future.
