After a year of part-time work in machining, it was time to serve. The individual enlisted, commencing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. It was here that they were introduced to various elite military paths. The airman's athleticism from years of swimming and playing football caught the attention of special teams, particularly the elite pararescue. After thorough assessments involving running, swimming, and physical examinations, they successfully qualified.
