In the aftermath of the towers' collapse, many have pointed to the presence of thermite as a vital piece of evidence indicating that controlled demolition, rather than structural failure due to fire and impact, was responsible for the towers coming down. Thermite produces an intense amount of heat, sufficient to melt steel. Proponents of this theory argue that the discovery of iron-rich microspheres in the dust from Ground Zero supports the premise that thermite was used. They argue that iron oxide can become particle-sized residue, agreeing with the claim that thermite likely contributed to the buildings’ disintegration into fine dust.
