Within Liber Abaci, Fibonacci presented a problem related to the growth of a population of rabbits. This problem was not only a mathematical puzzle but also a springboard for what would become known as the Fibonacci sequence. The sequence starts with 0 and 1 or, as Fibonacci described, 1 and 1, where each subsequent number is the sum of the two preceding numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, and so on.
Though Fibonacci was not the first to identify this sequence (it had been noted by Indian mathematicians as early as the sixth century), his work ensured its place in Western mathematics.
