Emergency Locator Transmitters are devices fitted in the back of larger commercial aircraft, such as the Boeing 757 and 767. These devices are designed to activate automatically upon impact, broadcasting a distress signal to help locate the aircraft in the event of a crash. While pilots can manually activate ELTs in some planes, it was revealed that this was not possible for the 767 models used in flights 11 and 175.
