Part 5/9:
The Phantom element serves to suspend the sensitive element within its structure. The arrangement allows the sensitive element to maintain ideal alignment without introducing undesired torque or friction. It achieves this through a wire suspension connected to the top of the phantom stem. This unique setup allows the sensitive element to respond efficiently to changes in position.
The Spider Element and Alignment Control
Supporting the sensitive and phantom elements is the spider element, which connects these two assemblies while ensuring they operate in unison. As the sensitive element directs itself towards North, it generates a twisting motion that the wire suspension must prevent from becoming tangled.
