Regaining consciousness, he again sought fluid and relief, tearing off tumbleweeds and digging near a dried-up creek bed, desperately trying to find water. His exhaustion led to him pulling apart tumbleweeds, searching for a hidden water source, but to no avail. In a state of panic, he noticed a large fire ant hill and decided to lay on top, hoping the ants would keep him awake—a desperate attempt to stave off death by dehydration and exhaustion.
