Paul explained that they used three identical jars, labeled A, B, and C. Each jar contained two cups of distilled water and one cup of long-grain rice, which had been plain and unprocessed. The jars were thoroughly cleaned and sterilized in a dishwasher with steam sanitization before beginning the experiment to ensure a neutral starting point.
From the outset, Paul and Bob began the ritual of speaking different words to each jar daily. Jar A was labeled as "thank you," while Jar B was given the phrase "I hate you." Jar C was ignored, serving as a control. Paul mentioned that he started the experiment on May 30, 2015, and Bob initiated his on May 29, 2015.
