The physical assembly involved constructing a plastic box that would contain the stacked copper plates, separated by small blocks made of glued plastic pieces. These blocks held the plates about one inch apart, more than the initial three-eighths of an inch, allowing adequate space for the spikes to develop and for electrical connections.
A funnel—originally an old kitchen funnel—was to be attached at the bottom. This funnel acts as a focus point to channel the collected electrical energy down to a single wire. Paul soldered wires across the plates in series, ensuring series connectivity to magnify the voltage output.
