The experiment begins with three magnets aligned in a north-to-south configuration, pressed together, and placed atop magnetic viewing paper. This special paper visualizes magnetic field lines, giving concrete images of invisible forces. The magnets are mounted on a small ring or frame with a spring mechanism at the center, allowing for rotation and observation of their magnetic influence.
As the magnets are spun, various behaviors are noted. The magnet spins differently depending on its orientation; for example, when the ring is flipped or the countersink (a small recessed area on the ring) is rotated to face upwards, its interactions change subtly. The experimenter carefully observes if the inner magnets are affected by the outer ones or by external objects, noting the forces at play.
