Part 5/10:
Preservation and Future Projects
The inspection concluded with a visual check of the motor and other key components, which appeared very clean. The operator hinted at ongoing restoration efforts, mentioning the need to replace a safety switch damaged during transportation. A new three-phase safety switch was ordered cheaply from eBay, reflecting a practical and cost-effective approach to repairs.
In addition, the operator discussed the considerable weight of the lathe—approximately 1,400 pounds—comparing it to a similar-sized South Bend shaper that also features thick castings, reinforcing its sturdy construction. The emphasis on the machine's robustness aligns with plans for future use, perhaps in precision machining or educational demonstrations.
