As he matured, his interests expanded into various scientific fields. He developed a fascination with chemistry, establishing a substantial laboratory at home with chemicals and equipment. His support system included his supportive father, a branch manager for a major encyclopedia publisher, who encouraged exploration through access to an extensive library on nearly every subject.
Alongside scientific pursuits, he had a penchant for firearms. His father supported this hobby, taking him to gun stores and antique shops, where he bought surplus rifles and weaponry, including deactivated Browning automatic rifles, Snider Enfield rifles, and even a Ross rifle in .303 caliber. He rebuilt and restored firearms, displaying a craftsmanship-oriented approach to his interests.
