Access to the interior of the Kaaba is restricted to a select group, including religious dignitaries and maintenance personnel. Inside, the space is modestly furnished, featuring wooden pillars, a cabinet for storing scented oils, and a collection of lamps. A ladder is used to access the roof for maintenance and replacement of the Kiswa—the ornate cloth that drapes the Kaaba, traditionally black with gold embroidery.
