To visit the dark web, you can’t just use your regular web browser. Think of your standard browser as a shiny tourist submarine painted with your name; it reveals who you are and where you come from. Instead, you need a special secret submarine called Tor—short for the Onion Router.
The Tor network works by encrypting your data with multiple layers like an onion—hence the name. When you send a message on Tor, it’s wrapped in many layers of encryption and sent through a series of volunteer computers worldwide. Each computer peels away one layer, passing it along until it reaches the destination. By bouncing your signal through many different countries and computers, your activity becomes nearly impossible to trace back to you.
