Contrary to popular belief, the tomato is not intrinsically Italian. Its origins trace back to the ancient Americas, specifically the regions of northern Peru and southern Ecuador. In these areas, the wild plant Solanum pimpinellifolium still produces tiny, pea-sized tomatoes. Over time, this species gave rise to Solanum lycopersicum, the cultivated tomato we recognize today.
