Further claims involve underwater structures off the coast of Indonesia and Micronesia, where legends speak of sunken cities and ancient ruins. Hancock suggests these may be remnants of a global network of civilizations that survived the cataclysmic events at the end of the last Ice Age.
Yet, detailed scientific investigations, including drilling and geological surveys, have often found these underwater features to be natural coral formations or geological anomalies rather than man-made structures. For instance, a 2010-2014 study examined the "pillars" near Nan Madol—an archaeological complex in Micronesia—concluding that they were natural coral formations, not ancient edifices.
