Kakai is surprised at Banser’s poverty, especially given their reputation among Babylon’s many social classes, from the northern blondes to the southern browns. The conversation quickly reveals a shared discontent; although Babylon is famed for its wealth and display, Banser and Kakai feel their efforts have not yielded proportional rewards. Despite years of diligent work—Banser in building chariots and Kakai in perfecting the art of music—they remain without the wealth and comfort they crave.
