Similarly, Vietnam, Nigeria, and other regimes received aid that bolstered totalitarian rule, often at the expense of their populations’ well-being.
Aiding Regimes of Oppression
Many regimes notorious for human rights atrocities—such as those in Cuba, North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union—have benefited from vast IMF and World Bank funding, despite their brutal suppression of dissent. The rationale is that the banks do not evaluate regimes' policies but instead view socialist and communist governments as vehicles for building a global socialist order.
