Part 8/16:

Unlike other schools, the Stoics argue that virtue—wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation—is the only true good. External things such as wealth, health, reputation, and pleasure are indifferents, meaning they hold no intrinsic moral value.

Living virtuously involves living in accordance with nature, which means aligning ourselves with the divine logos—the rational order governing the universe. To do so is to act according to reason, practice self-control, and develop inner virtue.

The Dichotomy of Control

A central Stoic teaching is the distinction between what we can and cannot control. Our will—our judgments, choices, and actions—are within our power; external circumstances like the weather, others’ opinions, or mortality are beyond our control.
