In therapeutic contexts, especially with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), individuals grapple with intrusive thoughts and obsessive rumination about past events—particularly sudden relationship collapses or betrayals. Their innate drive is to retool perceptions and behaviors to prevent recurrence. This intensive self-scrutiny, however, can become overwhelming and unmanageable, especially when the traumas involve complex, long-term relationships.
