The reaction from the scientific community was brutal. "These were like the eminent leaders of the field, and more than just saying you're wrong, they were like, 'You're wrong, and this is like a bad thing to believe or a bad thing to say.'" But Altman didn't just believe - he knew.
"The core beliefs were deep learning works, and it gets better with scale, and I think those were both somewhat heretical beliefs then," he explained. But something extraordinary happened - the impossible became possible. "With one GPT-4, like, that was one of the few moments in that thing where I was like, 'Okay, we have to be really great on our hands,' but that was just the beginning."
