The Dangers of Cynicism
Cynicism doesn't just hurt our self-perception; it also harms our relationships, communities, economies, and society as a whole. Dozens of studies have shown that cynics suffer more from depression, drink more heavily, and even die younger than non-cynics.
The philosopher Thomas Hobbes encapsulated the cynical worldview in his book "Leviathan," arguing that people need government to restrain them because, left to our own devices, human lives are "nasty, brutish, and short." Ironically, this description better fits cynics themselves, who are trapped in a cycle of suspicion and isolation.
