The discussion around declining ratings in the NBA is multifaceted. There are various types of ratings declines—some cyclical, others related to changes in the quality of play, and some that are deemed well-deserved. The NBA, however, sits at the bottom of this spectrum with what many would call a justified ratings decline, as it has seemingly taken its fanbase for granted.
Over recent years, the league has been accused of alienating sections of its audience, particularly following controversial social and political statements made by players and the league itself. Many fans have turned away, feeling unwelcome and disregarded. The culmination of these actions has led to a performance on par, or even worse, than that of the WNBA, which not long ago was often overshadowed by its counterpart.
