With no immediate funds to settle Lucky's extortion-like demands, the narrator resorted to a risky measure suggested by law enforcement: writing a check, despite knowing it was a felony to bounce one knowingly. After some tense negotiations, Lucky agreeably accepted a check, even though the car was technically dead at that point.
In a twist that could only come from a Hollywood script, the narrator, while recovering the car, was confronted by Lucky, who had become irate over the situation. However, instead of succumbing to threats, the narrator calmly declared that he was merely recovering his property and had no obligation to payoff a "ransom" for stolen possessions.
