Part 2/11:
Founded in 2005 in a Brooklyn apartment by Rob Kalen and his partners, Etsy was envisioned as a marketplace dedicated to handmade goods, vintage items, and craft supplies. At a time when selling online was largely dominated by platforms like eBay and Craigslist, Etsy offered a refreshing alternative for artists. It was a space for genuine connection between creators and consumers seeking unique, authentic products rather than mass-produced items.
In its early years, Etsy thrived on community and support. It provided resources, business tips, and a low barrier to entry for sellers— a mere 20 cent listing fee and a 3.5% commission on sales. This environment fostered a sense of belonging among makers and attracted buyers eager to support the shop small movement.
