In 2007, Safaricom launched M-PESA, allowing Kenyans to send and receive money via their mobile phones without needing traditional banking infrastructure. According to Bob Collymore, the former CEO of Safaricom, the initiative was born out of necessity. With eight out of ten Kenyans possessing a mobile phone and many lacking access to bank accounts, creating a platform that utilized existing mobile technology emerged as a viable solution.
