However, the economic success of Indians led to mounting tensions with local communities. As more educated Africans began to aspire to roles and opportunities previously held by Indians, anti-Indian sentiment flared. Although there were more African traders in Uganda by the 1950s, the volume of business conducted by Indian traders was significantly greater. This prompted legislative efforts to restrict Indian participation in the economy, exposing them to hostility driven by rising competition.
