The economic impact of this expulsion was immediate and catastrophic. As businesses were abandoned or transferred to often untrained hands, Uganda’s economy teetered on the brink of collapse. Key sectors like agriculture suffered from neglect, leading to a decline in productivity and the emergence of health crises, such as sleeping sickness propagated by mismanaging agricultural lands.
Aftermath and Attempts at Restoration
Two decades post-expulsion, Uganda continued to feel the aftereffects of the Indian exodus. Even with efforts to reclaim businesses and properties, very few former Asian residents returned to Uganda, facing hostility and unresolved resentments.
