As the winds of independence began to stir across Africa, so too did political tensions within Uganda. With independence declared on October 9, 1962, Uganda became a republic, but it was marked by political fragmentation and rivalries among various ethnic and religious groups. In the late 1960s, President Milton Obote’s consolidation of power in the face of these divisions was critical to Amin's ascent to military leadership.
