By 1966, tensions reached a boiling point. Amin was a key figure in the military as well as in Obote's cabinet, yet he seemed to be scheming for greater power, a notion compounded by his connection to Britain's support due to fears of Obote's perceived socialist leanings. Following a coup in January 1971, Amin seized control while Obote was away; he proclaimed himself president and positioned his regime as a restorer of law and order.
