The fear of betrayal was omnipresent in Amin's life, especially from those he once called allies. His cousin, General Charles Arube, whom he had known since childhood, represented a new threat. Arube's plans for a coup — which were deeply painful for Amin given their familial ties — pushed Amin further into a corner. As a dictator caught in a spiral of violence and paranoia, Amin was aware that survival in the brutal world he had created relied on him willing to betray even his own family.
